Here are some practical things to consider when purchasing a tournament grade marker.
Is it in my price range?
Am I paying for things I don't need? (It may have day glow orange faded paint but will that really help my game)
Am I going to have to buy more upgrades to get it to the level I need?
Is it dependable? (Maybe the most important)
How does the warranty work? (will you have to send if off or can it be worked on locally)
Is it a first year model with a never before seen design? (They tend to have more problems)

Finally, have you had the chance to hold the marker you are looking for in your hand or have you just been reading advertisements? Don't listen to the hype; make sure it's right for YOU.
After you select your marker the next most important addition you can make is good barrel system. Paint manufacturing has come along ways in the last few years, producing paintballs that are more consistent than in the past. However, they still can be affected by the weather. A barrel system that allows you to adjust caliber size is a must.
There are several other considerations that you will want use in your decision. The total weight of a marker system is important and the carbon fiber barrels offer a great light alternative. Clean them carefully and they should provide you years of service.
Upgrade boards offer you a wide range of programmable choices. When making your upgrade decision keep in mind that the board should match your eye system and hopper. All of the gangster modes in the world won't help your tournament game and if the board does not work well with your ball feed system. If it does not match then it's a waste of money and will hurt your game rather than help.
Today’s stock bolts are much better than those of the past. However, upgrade bolts offer you better air efficiency and ease of use. If you are playing back and trying to hold your lane down with a smaller tank, air efficiency is very important.
Weight and comfort are the two criteria you will want to use if you decide to upgrade your trigger and or frame. Lightweight frames and triggers can make a huge difference in the total weight of your marker and the right fit can be equally important. No matter how fast your marker is and how tricked out it is, if the frame/trigger does not fit your hand you will never be able to take advantage of the rest of the features.
